Great Basin Brewing Company Offers Compost to Commemorate Earth Day

RENO, Nev. (April 19, 2012) Celebrate Earth Day with your eco-friendly friends! Great Basin Brewing Company is commemorating Earth Day at both its brewery-restaurant locations in Reno and Sparks, with a certified organic limited edition ale and some of the brewery’s compost materials. The brewery will be pouring Great Basin Preservation Pale Ale, a specialty brew using certified organic hops and malt, while bags of brewery compost will also be for sale. Brewery staff are happy to educate patrons on “what you didn’t eat” – where it goes after your meal, how it becomes compost, and how it can foster new growth in your garden.

“It’s our way of giving back to the earth,” said Bonda Young, owner of Great Basin Brewing Company. “And this is a great way to show the community how their food comes full circle – from the farm, to the table, and back to the garden.”

The Earth Day celebration also supports a great local cause. A portion of the proceeds from the Preservation Pale Ale and compost sales will be donated to the Nevada Land Conservancy to support their effort to protect and preserve Nevada’s open spaces and special places.

Great Basin Brewing Company has put into practice one of the area’s most successful environmentally responsible business models. Year-round, the brewery stands by its policy to support local farmers, observe earth-friendly practices, and ensure that as much as possible of the restaurant’s ingredients and materials are composted, recycled or reused – currently achieving that at a rate of 95%.
